Music: A Window to the Soul

This is a well-reasoned and clearly written guide for all those who seek to experience, understand and share a love for classical music through informed listening.

The book presents a focused look at the life and works of cherished composers and will lead readers and listeners to experience the profound impact of their music intellectually, emotionally, psychologically and spiritually.

The works chosen, range from the medieval simplicity of plainchant to the complex twentieth century classical folk-music of Bartók. Each chapter includes musical encounters, one of which is a detailed guide for the chosen work found on the accompanying CD.

Music: A Window to the Soul  is a tantalizing guide to informed listening that will inspire deeper study in teachers, students and amateurs. It will be a valuable addition to any music library.

Music for the Soul

This book leads readers to experience personally, some great masterworks of Western classical music. An overview of the Baroque, Classical and Romantic periods is followed by concise biographies of Albinoni, Mozart, Beethoven, Mendelssohn, Chopin, Brahms and Dvořák.

The works chosen are the slow, heartbeat second movements of concertos and symphonies. A greater understanding of each work is cultivated through a detailed listening guide, complete with musical notation, a diagram of the musical form and personal reflection questions for the listener.

This listening guide is both a friendly introduction to classical music for new listeners and a companion along the road to deeper understanding for those with more experience.

About the Author

A lifelong interest in music has led Lorraine Kneier to a varied career as music teacher, administrator of fine arts education programs, curriculum writer, choir director, adjudicator, and workshop leader.

Through her writing and teaching, she hopes to convey the many ways music enhances our awareness of beauty and love. It is not surprising that she has found the music of the masters – slow movements, the heartbeat movements – wonderful vehicles for reaching the core of the human spirit.

Both books were inspired by Lorraine’s love of the classics as well as the workshops and retreats she has conducted. As she helps participants experience and appreciate the music ofthe masters, she found that almost universally, the music touches their deepest places, related in some way to their personal life-journey and lifted their awareness to a higher plane. It is Lorraine’s hope that the chosen works for each book will find a strong resonance in your soul. It is this soulful quality of the great masters that transcends generations and cultures.
